people who insist on quoting the alexander pope 'eternal sunshine' line:
1) almost certainly hadn't come across it before the movie
2) probably haven't read the damn thing (it's 366 lines)
3) might not have been able to name the author before reading this post
4) quite possibly don't understand the line, particularly without the benefit of context, historical or otherwise (for 'otherwise' see #2)
5) DEFINITELY couldn't tell you the name of the poem off the top of their heads without consulting google or equivalent internet search engine
not that i'm particuarly attached to this poem (cough 'eloisa to abelard' cough) or to its author, but i am getting really tired of seeing it in the favorite quotes sections of facebook profiles
ugh. congrats guys - alexander pope is officially cliche. happy now?
addendum: these people - alluded to above - tend to have 'hey delilah' set as their ringtone, consume vast quantities of free trade coffee and/or chai, and routinely choose paper over plastic as if it makes one iota of difference
::shudder::

I find this to be true, too, of Oscar Wilde.
I don't even like Pope. Too stodgy for my taste, but I've always leaned towards modernism (not post-modernism).
